Koch Becomes Men's Soccer
All-Time Winningest Coach
Aug. 30, 2002
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Jeff Deren's (Chicopee, Mass.) goal at the 88:50 mark propelled UMass to a 3-2 win over Towson in the opening round of the Navy Fall Classic in Annapolis, Md.
The win gave UMass Head Coach Sam Koch his 124th win at the helm of the Minutemen, which moved him into first place on the men's soccer victory list. He entered the season tied with Lawrence Briggs (1930-67) with 123 victories. Koch's totals now stand at 124-76-18, a winning percentage of .606.
Deren beat Towson goalkeeper Andy Hicks with a shot to the far post that just snuck in the corner to give UMass the late lead. The Minutemen then held on in the waning moments to get the win in the season opener for both teams.
Towson took a 1-0 lead at the 5:20 mark on an Ade Elliott header. Elloiott's goal, which was assisted by Machel Millwood, came off a cross that beat UMass goalkeeper Enzo Altomare (Derby, Conn.) on the right side.
UMass tied the game at the 26:14 mark on a Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) goal. Myers got to a rebound first off Hicks and slid it into the side netting. The Minutemen then took a 2-1 lead at the 41:44 mark on an Andrew Eicher (Billerica, Mass.) goal, with an assist from Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.). Eicher headed a corner kick to the shortside to give the Minutemen the lead heading into halftime.
Towson tied the game at 2-2 when Millwood scored unassisted at the 67:58 mark. Millwood outran the Minuteman defense to a loose ball and drove home a shot to the far corner. The game stayed tied at 2-2 until Deren's late heroics won it for UMass.
Towson outshot the Minutemen, 17-10, but were stymied by Altomare's goalkeeping. Altomare recorded six saves in the nets, including four in the decisive second half.
The Minutemen will be in action next on Sunday, Sept. 1, when they play the host school, Navy, at 3:30 p.m.
