CHICOPEE, Mass. - Senior Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) made a triumphant return home, scoring three goals, including the game-winner in the 85th minute to lead UMass to a 4-3 win over No. 7-ranked Rutgers in exhibition action on Sunday night in Chicopee.

Deren gave the Minutemen a 1-0 lead at the 33:50 mark with assists from Jason Scudamore (Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio). Deren beat Rutgers' goalkeeper Ricky Zinter to a loose ball and flipped it into the net over Zinter's head.

Rutgers tied the game at one moments later on a Chris Wilson goal with an assist from Anthony Schiavino at the 37:11 mark. UMass regained the lead just a minute later when Deren found the back of the net again as he slid a shot to the far right post under a diving Zinter at the 38:43 mark for a 2-1 lead. Myers assisted on the goal.

The Minutemen then took a 3-1 lead on a perfectly-executed corner kick from Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.) to Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.), who scissor-kicked the ball into the left corner at the 48:16 mark.

However, the Scarlet Knights tied the game on a penalty kick by Josh Gros at 74:24 and a Sharif El Bialy free kick at the 79:11 mark, before Deren struck again, scoring on a corner kick from Derek Rhodes at the 84:35 mark for his third goal of the evening and a 4-3 lead. The Minutemen then withstood a furious Rutgers rally at the end of regulation to claim the 4-3 victory.

"This is a great game for us to build on," said UMass Head Coach Sam Koch. "We gave them an opportunity to hang around, and they capitalized. But I was proud of the way we responded after they had tied the game.

"I couldn't be happier for Jeff (Deren) coming home and playing the way he did," added Koch. "He has been slowed by injuries in the past, and now that he is healthy, people are seeing what a great player he is."

The Minutemen will open the regular season next Friday at the Navy Tournament in Annapolis, Md., against Towson at 4:00 p.m. On Sunday, they will play the host school, Navy, at 3:30 p.m.
