No. 13 Men's Soccer Fights No. 11 Brown To 1-1 Draw In Double OT
Aug. 24, 2008
AMHERST, Mass. - In the final exhibition match of the preseason, the No. 13 UMass men's soccer team fought No. 11 Brown to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. Sophomore midfielder Chris Vaccaro (Stockton, N.J.) tallied the lone goal for the Minutemen in the 67th minute, before Brown was able to equalize in the 82nd minute.
The exhibition match was originally slated to be played with the two overtime sessions despite the score being deadlocked after the first two regulation halves. Neither team was able to score the go-ahead goal in the extra periods.
Sophomore Ben Arikian (West Islip, N.Y.) set-up Vaccaro's goal on the counter attack. Arikian slipped a pass between two defenders where Vaccaro settled the ball, turned and fired a shot just under the cross bar that flittered towards the right post.
Will Lee scored the game-tying goal for Brown after receiving a low cross from Sean McGrath in the far right corner. McGrath's cross skimmed the grass in front of the goalmouth going towards the back left post. Lee controlled the ball and tucked his shot inside the left post.
UMass keeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) played the first 67 minutes making nine saves while allowing no goals. Sophomore Shane Curran-Hays (Camp Hill, Pa.) played the remaining 43 minutes making two saves and allowing the one goal. Simmons made eight saves in the first half stopping all eight of Brown's shots.
Brown finished the game with a slight edge in shots, 17-to-14, and a 7-to-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams had several other close opportunities to score, but were unable to finish the attempts.
UMass will open the regular-season this Friday, Aug. 29 at Holy Cross (7 PM) and Sunday at Boston University (6 PM). The Minutemen's home opener will be on Saturday, Sept. 6 against Siena at Rudd Field.
The Minutemen finished the exhibition season with a 1-0-1 record with the previous 2-0 win over the University of Montreal last Tuesday. UMass allowed just one goal in a total of 200 minutes played. Mike and Mark DeSantis (Stoneham, Mass.) each scored against Montreal. Arikian finished the preseason with assists in both matches. Simmons made a total of 12 saves in goal and did not allow a goal while in net.
