Men's Soccer Tops Montreal In Exhibition
Aug. 18, 2003
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team kicked off its exhibition season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Montreal on Monday afternoon at Rudd Field. UMass will conclude its exhibition season with a match-up against No. 3-ranked St. John's Saturday at Szot Park in Chicopee at 7:00 p.m.
UMass wasted little time in getting on the board as senior Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) scored from in front just 9:09 into the first half. Myers fired a rocket that slid off the goalkeeper's hands to the right corner for a 1-0 lead. Oral Bullen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied an assist on the play.
The Minutemen kept the pressure on in the first half, outshooting Montreal, 9-4, but couldn't get anymore past the Montreal keeper. UMass also had five corner kicks to the Carabins' one.
UMass added to the lead at the 65:18 mark when freshman Richie Higa (Honolulu, Hawaii) took a Gabe Barnard (Williamsburg, Mass.) corner kick and placed a header into the top right corner for the Minutemen's second goal of the game. The Minutemen almost added to the lead late in the game on a Myers' penalty kick, but the Montreal keeper made a spectacular save that deflected off the crossbar to keep the Carabins within striking distance.
UMass dominated the statistics, outshooting Montreal, 19-9 and drawing eight corners to the Carabins' three. Three UMass goalies, Colin Burns (Newark, Del.), Dave Doucette (Middleton, Mass.) and Nick Billman (St. Louis, Mo.) combined for five saves to earn the shutout.
UMass will take on St. John's Saturday night at Chicopee's Szot Park. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
