UMass Discontinues Skiing Teams As Varsity Sports
The University of Massachusetts, Amherst will discontinue sponsoring its men's and women's skiing programs as varsity sports beginning with the 2010 season. This move is being made as part of a budget reduction and reorganization plan to address an $850,000 shortfall due to a permanent state budget cut of $600,000 and additional expenses. In addition to the action being taken with the ski programs the department will make administrative reductions, across the board operating cuts and use non-base funding to fill the remaining gap. Zahoruiko Named Second Team All American At USCSA Nationals

UMass Men's Skiing co-captain Alex Zahoruiko was named a Second Team All American at this week's USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. The Minuteman senior recovered after a slow first run to finish 15th in the Giant Slalom on Thursday. Zahoruiko played a key role in UMass Skiing's success this season, finishing in the top 15 of the Giant Slalom seven times. The North Andover, Mass. native finishes his career at UMass as one of the premiere skiers in program history. (more)
 
Men's Skiing Competes At NCAA EISA Regionals

UMass Men's Skiing completed its season last weekend when they participated in the NCAA EISA Regionals at Sugarloaf. The Minutemen competed in the Slalom event because of wind and rain on the mountain. Andrew Hawes (Concord, Mass.) led the Minutemen with a 21st place finish. (more)

Q&A With Head Ski Coach Skip Fox Recapping The ECSC Regionals
The UMass Women's Ski Team captured a trip to the USCSA Nationals next weekend after their fifth place finish in last weekend's ECSC Regionals. The Minutewomen placed three skiers in the top-15 during both days of the Regionals. The Men's team, the defending USCSA National Champions, will not be returning to the Nationals after their sixth place finish over the weekend. The Minutemen had a tough day in Saturday's Slalom, finishing in ninth place before recovering with a second place finish in the Giant Slalom. Andrew Hawes, Matthew Small and Travis Hopkins will participate in the NCAA EISA Eastern Regional Championships this weekend at Sugarloaf.

Men's Skiing Places Six, Women Fifth, At ECSC Regionals

    The UMass Ski team competed in the ECSC Regionals this past weekend in Waterville Valley, N.H. The women's team finished fifth overall, securing a spot in the USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. from March 3-7. The Men's team finished sixth overall after a disappointing ninth place finish in the Slalom before a second place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom. UMass Skiing will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the EISA Regionals at Sugarloff.

    UMass Skiing Prepares For ECSC Regionals At Waterville Valley
    UMass Skiing will travel to Waterville Valley, N.H. this weekend to compete in the ECSC Regionals. The Minutemen are coming off a successful weekend at the Boston College Carnival, where they locked a spot for the USCSA Regionals. The men's team finished second in the Giant Slalom before a sixth place Slalom finish while the women placed fourth in Friday's Giant Slalom before finishing fifth in the Slalom. The Men's team finished the regular season in third place in the MacConnell standings, while the Minutewomen finished fifth.
