Men's Ski Team In Fifth Place After Giant Slalom At USCSA Nationals

WINTER PARK, Colo. - On Thursday, the UMass men's ski team recorded an impressive fifth place finish in the Giant Slalom at the USCSA Nationals. The Minutemen were led by senior Rush Hawkins, who finished eighth overall. Also placing in the top three for UMass was freshman Andrew Hawes and sophomore Alex Zahoruiko. The women's Slalom takes center stage on Friday before the men's Slalom takes place on Saturday.

After advancing past the USCSA Regionals, the Minutemen look to do damage at the national level. Rush Hawkins was first to cross the finish line for UMass, finishing eighth overall with a time of 1:55.50. He was followed by freshman Andrew Hawes in 16th (1:57.93) and Alex Zahoruiko in 25th (2:01.04).

Also finishing, but not placing was freshman Travis Hopkins in 42nd (2:05.78). Freshman Ian Hohmeister participated, but did not finish.

From the women's side, Eliza Hawkins looks for her second consecutive individual national title on Friday. The men's Giant Slalom takes place on Saturday. Check back to for complete results and recaps from the USCSA Nationals.

The UMass Women's Ski Team captured a trip to the USCSA Nationals next weekend after their fifth place finish in last weekend's ECSC Regionals. The Minutewomen placed three skiers in the top-15 during both days of the Regionals. The Men's team, the defending USCSA National Champions, will not be returning to the Nationals after their sixth place finish over the weekend. The Minutemen had a tough day in Saturday's Slalom, finishing in ninth place before recovering with a second place finish in the Giant Slalom. Andrew Hawes, Matthew Small and Travis Hopkins will participate in the NCAA EISA Eastern Regional Championships this weekend at Sugarloaf.

    The UMass Ski team competed in the ECSC Regionals this past weekend in Waterville Valley, N.H. The women's team finished fifth overall, securing a spot in the USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. from March 3-7. The Men's team finished sixth overall after a disappointing ninth place finish in the Slalom before a second place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom. UMass Skiing will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the EISA Regionals at Sugarloff.
    UMass Skiing Prepares For ECSC Regionals At Waterville Valley
    UMass Skiing will travel to Waterville Valley, N.H. this weekend to compete in the ECSC Regionals. The Minutemen are coming off a successful weekend at the Boston College Carnival, where they locked a spot for the USCSA Regionals. The men's team finished second in the Giant Slalom before a sixth place Slalom finish while the women placed fourth in Friday's Giant Slalom before finishing fifth in the Slalom. The Men's team finished the regular season in third place in the MacConnell standings, while the Minutewomen finished fifth.
