waterville valley, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts women's ski team won the USCSA Eastern Regional Championship with their victories in the giant slalom and slalom events held at Waterville Valley, N.H., Feb. 23-24. The men finished second in the giant slalom and third in the slalom, to earn a second-place overall finish.

Leading the way for UMass was junior captain Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) for the men, and senior Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.) on the women's side. Gibson won the giant slalom event, posting a time of 1:30.54, while his time of 1:26.41 placed him third in the slalom. Lewenberg was victorious in the slalom event, registering a time of 1:29.46. She finished third in the giant slalom, posting a time of 1:36.24. The efforts of both skiers earned them individual regional championship titles.

Nikki Smith (Okemos, Mich.) won the giant slalom event for the women's squad, posting a time of 1:34.43. She scored points for the team in the slalom event as well with a ninth-place finish. Freshman Caitlin Doughty (Quincy, Mass.) also played a role in the first-place team effort, finishing sixth in the giant slalom. Senior captain Molly Lyon (Pittsfield, Mass.) contributed to the win in the slalom event, posting a time of 1:34.71, good enough for 12th. Freshmen Shaleigne Collins (North Reading, Mass.) and Lisbet Rauh (Princeton, Mass.) also skied for the Minutewomen. Rauh competed in the slalom, placing 22nd, while Collins appeared in the giant slalom and finished 18th.

On the men's side, junior Dave Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) and graduate student Nick Kulkarni (Troy, Mich.) both skied well, scoring points for the Minutemen in each event. Pomeroy finished sixth in the giant slalom and 17th in the slalom. Kulkarni placed 13th in the slalom and 15th in the giant slalom. Senior Jay Robbins (Pittsfield, Mass.) and senior Chris Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) also skied in the giant slalom, placing 16th and tied for 17th, respectively. Other Minutemen competing in the slalom included freshman Patrick Bachant (Hubbardston, Mass.) and Robbins, finishing 18th and 56th, respectively.

 

 

Both the men's and women's squads have qualified for national competition. They will travel Truckee, Calif., on March 3 to begin the USCSA National Championship. The roster of Massachusetts skiers traveling to this event will be identical to that of the regional competition.

The UMass Women's Ski Team captured a trip to the USCSA Nationals next weekend after their fifth place finish in last weekend's ECSC Regionals. The Minutewomen placed three skiers in the top-15 during both days of the Regionals. The Men's team, the defending USCSA National Champions, will not be returning to the Nationals after their sixth place finish over the weekend. The Minutemen had a tough day in Saturday's Slalom, finishing in ninth place before recovering with a second place finish in the Giant Slalom. Andrew Hawes, Matthew Small and Travis Hopkins will participate in the NCAA EISA Eastern Regional Championships this weekend at Sugarloaf.

Men's Skiing Places Six, Women Fifth, At ECSC Regionals

    The UMass Ski team competed in the ECSC Regionals this past weekend in Waterville Valley, N.H. The women's team finished fifth overall, securing a spot in the USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. from March 3-7. The Men's team finished sixth overall after a disappointing ninth place finish in the Slalom before a second place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom. UMass Skiing will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the EISA Regionals at Sugarloff.

    UMass Skiing Prepares For ECSC Regionals At Waterville Valley
    UMass Skiing will travel to Waterville Valley, N.H. this weekend to compete in the ECSC Regionals. The Minutemen are coming off a successful weekend at the Boston College Carnival, where they locked a spot for the USCSA Regionals. The men's team finished second in the Giant Slalom before a sixth place Slalom finish while the women placed fourth in Friday's Giant Slalom before finishing fifth in the Slalom. The Men's team finished the regular season in third place in the MacConnell standings, while the Minutewomen finished fifth.
