UMass Men's Ski Team Ends Regular Season In Third
Feb. 18, 2003
HENNIKER, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts women's ski team achieved victory in the giant slalom event at the Colby-Sawyer Carnival in Newbury, N.H., Feb. 14. This win, along with a third-place effort in the slalom, guaranteed that the Minutewomen would finish in first place overall in the MacConnell Division of the ECSC (Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference). The men's team ended the season in third-place after a second-place finish in the slalom this past weekend.
Senior Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.) won the women's slalom with a total time of 1:45.61 to earn her second first-place finish of the year. She also skied to a fourth-place finish in the giant slalom event with a mark of 1:49.94. Two of Lewenberg's teammates, freshman Caitlin Doughty (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Nikki Smith (Okemos, Mich.), finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to give the Minutewomen the overall giant slalom team victory.
The men's team finished second in the slalom event, led by junior captain Beau Gibson's (Oakland, Md.) mark of 1:34.73, good enough for third-place. Junior Dave Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) remained consistent as well, posting another top-10 finish as he registered a time of 1:37.73. The giant slalom event saw the men struggle slightly, finishing fourth. An early fall by Gibson left Pomeroy as the top UMass skier, in 12th. Lacking a top-10 finisher made it difficult on the squad, but top-25 finishes by four other Minutemen left them in a position to still finish in the top three overall in the league.
Gibson finished the season in second-place of the entire league with 171 net points, while Pomeroy was fifth with 150. For the women, Lewenberg wrapped up the season in third amassing 183 points while Nikki Smith earned 119 points, to finish 12th. Both the men's and women's squads each had six skiers end the season in the top 30.
Though the regular season is over, competition will continue for both teams, as each of them qualified for regional competition. The NCAA Regionals will be held Feb. 21-22 in Middlebury, Vt. The skiers will then travel directly to the USCSA Regionals, held Feb. 23-24, in Waterville Valley, N.H.
