Ski Teams Conclude Regular Season: Men Finish Second, Women Finish Sixth

BROWNSVILLE, Vt. - The UMass ski teams concluded their regular season with mixed results at the Boston College Carnival. Both days featured Giant Slalom races. Led by Jason Small's second place finish on Saturday and Rush Hawkins' first place finish on Sunday, the men's squad finished in second on the season. They are headed to the ECSC Regional Championships on February 24. Due to an unfortunate injury to Eliza Hawkins, the Minutewomen were behind the eight ball all weekend. They finished in seventh on the weekend (sixth overall), one spot from qualifying to ski in the ECSC Regionals.
The men concluded the regular season on a high note, finishing second in Saturday's Giant Slalom. Jason Small continued his tremendous season by finishing second overall (1:20.65). Freshman Ian Hohmeister put together his best run of the season, finishing in fourth overall (1:21.80). They were followed by Alex Zahoruiko in tenth (1:22.52), Andrew Hawes in 13th (1:23.05), and Rush Hawkins in 20th (1:24.27). Adam Pogorzelski and Paul Lewenberg finished a respectable 35th and 36th, but did not place.
The Minutemen finished with a first place finish on Sunday. Rush Hawkins finished the regular season in style, with a first overall finish (1:24.45). Jason Small followed in fourth (1:25.57), brother Matthew Small in 11th (1:27.05), Andrew Hawes in 12th (1:27.11), and Travis Hopkins in 18th (1:27.82). Ian Hohmeister finished a tremendous weekend with an impressive 19th place finish, but did not place in the top five for UMass. Adam Pogorzelski and Paul Lewenberg finished for the second day in a row, but did not place.
On the year, both Rush Hawkins and Jason Small finished in the top five individually on the season. Hawkins finished in third and Small finished in fourth.
On Saturday, Eliza Hawkins got a concussion after falling on a steep pitch of the course. Without their junior leader, UMass didn't have enough to sneak into the top five teams. On Saturday, Emily Shilletto led the way with a ninth place finish (1:27.20). She was followed by Katie Weissman in 35th (1:31.86) and Amanda Lea in 44th (1:34.37). Emily Zimmerman and Maris Owczarski also finished for the Minutewomen.
Sunday proved to be more difficult for UMass. Katie Weissman led the way with a 36th place finish (1:38.63). She was followed by Emily Zimmerman in 38th (1:39.14) and Amanda Lea in 40th (1:40.16). Maris Owczarski finished the race for the second straight day.
All was not lost for the team as Eliza Hawkins did qualify for the ECSC Championships on an individual basis. She finished third overall on the season.
