Feb. 11, 2003
Brownsville, Vt. - The University of Massachusetts men's and women's ski teams finished fourth and third, respectively, at the Boston College Carnival held at Mount Ascutney in Brownsville, Vt., Feb. 8-9.
Junior Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) provided the lone top five finish for the men, winning the slalom in a time of 1:33.67. The team captain skied well in the first race of the giant slalom also, posting a time of 46.60, good enough for the lead. However, a fall in the second race pushed him back to 34th overall. Junior David Pomeroy (Winthrop, Mass.) put forth a good effort with another top-10 finish. He placed seventh and 11th in the giant slalom and slalom events with times of 1:34.55 and 1:38.73, respectively. Senior Jay Robbins (Pittsfield, Mass.) rounding out the top 15 in the giant slalom with a time of 1:36.45.
On the women's side, Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.) had the best day for the Minutewomen, finishing fourth in the giant slalom and ninth in the slalom, registering times of 1:39.56 and 1:45.29, respectively. Following Lewenberg in the slalom were teammates sophomore Nikki Smith (Okemos, Mich.) and senior captain Molly Lyon (Pittsfield, Mass.). Smith was 10th, while Lyon finished 11th. In the giant slalom, freshman Caitlin Doughty (Quincy, Mass.) was the only other Minutewoman to break the top 15, posting a time of 1:41.64, good enough for 11th.
Coming into this carnival, the men's squad was in second-place, leading Boston College by three points in the MacConnell Division standings. The team's fourth place finishes in both events, combined with BC's first and second place finishes, put the men in third, trailing the Eagles by two points.
Despite posting third place finishes in both events the Minutewomen are still on top of the standings in the MacConnell Division. The team held an eight-point advantage over their closest competitor upon entering the even, but its lead has now been trimmed to five, as Boston College, Colby-Sawyer and Brown all earned first or second-place points.
Both squads see their next action on Friday, Feb. 14, as they head to Newbury, N.H. for the Colby-Sawyer Carnival. They then move to Henniker, N.H. on Feb. 15 for the St. Anslem Carnival.
