Ski Teams Suffer Setback Despite Superb Performances By Hawkins Siblings

LINCOLN, N.H. - The UMass ski teams suffered a setback despite a few superb efforts over the weekend. The men's team failed to win their fifth straight race, falling to fourth in both the Brown Slalom and the MIT Giant Slalom. Senior Rush Hawkins led the men in both races, finishing third overall in the Slalom and eighth in the giant slalom. The women finished in sixth in the Slalom and seventh in the Giant Slalom. Junior Eliza Hawkins was the lone bright spot, as she finished in 11th on Friday before tying for first on Saturday.
Rush Hawkins got back to his old form by leading the men's squad. In the Slalom, he finished in third overall with a time of 1:26.62. He was followed by freshman Andrew Hawes in 11th (1:30.86), sophomore Alex Zahoruiko in 18th (1:32.06), freshman Ian Hohmeister in 19th (1:32.35), and sophomore Paul Lewenberg in 24th (1:34.03). Matthew Small, Adam Pogorzelski, Jason Small, and Travis Hopkins all finished the race, but didn't place.
Hawkins led the way once again on Saturday, this time finishing in eighth (1:55.99). Andrew Hawes followed him, coming in 14th (1:57.30). Freshman Matthew Small was a split second behind, finishing 15th (1:57.56). Freshman Travis Hopkins (20th) and Alex Zahoruiko (29th) rounded out the top five for the Minutemen. Paul Lewenberg, Adam Pogorzelski, and Ian Hohmeister did not place.
Rush's sister Eliza Hawkins led the way for the Minutewomen. She finished in 11th overall in the Slalom with a time of 1:33.50. She was followed by freshman Lauren Levey in 32nd (1:40.98) and sophomore Amanda Lea in 40th (1:47.08). Maris Owczarski and Emily Zimmerman also finished the race.
The Giant Slalom was highlighted by Hawkins' first place finish. She finished tied for first with a time of 1:59.06. She was followed by sophomore Emily Zimmerman in 37th (2:12.54) and freshman Katie Weissman in 39th (2:13.56). Lauren Levey and Amanda Lea finished in 45th and 47th respectively.
