AMHERST, Mass. - With the 2013 UMass men’s lacrosse season just around the corner, the preseason polls have begun to surface with the Minutemen being ranked No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Poll. Inside Lacrosse also included the preseason coaches rankings where UMass checks in at No. 9 among the top-20.

Defending NCAA Champion Loyola holds the No. 1 preseason spot according to Inside Lacrosse and the coaches. For the Inside Lacrosse poll, UMass was just behind Colgate which ended the Minutemen’s historic 2012 season in the NCAA First Round last season.

The coaches have UMass ranked No. 9 overall, just behind Denver and ahead of Princeton.

The Minutemen went 15-1 overall in 2012 including a perfect 6-0 mark en route to the CAA Regular-Season Title. With wins over Towson and Drexel in the CAA Championship Tournament, the UMass claimed its first-ever CAA Championship.

UMass returns three of its top five scorers from last season in Manny, Kyle Smith (33g, 20a) and Colin Fleming(26g, 8a). Smith will anchor a defense which lost three standout starters in All-American Tom Celentani, Greg Anderson and Greg Rushing along with goalie Tim McCormack. Redshirt freshman Zach Oliveri, who helped the U.S. Under 19 National Team win the FIL World Championship this past summer, figures to be the top netminder for the Minutemen entering 2013.

The Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook also named seniors Will Manny and Jake Smith to its Preseason All-America teams as announced earlier. Manny, one of the top favorites this year to win the Tewaaraton Trophy, was a first team selection, while Smith was an honorable mention as a close defenseman.

The 2013 campaign will officially kick off on February 9 when the Minutemen host Army at Garber Field (1 PM).

2013 Face-Off Yearbook: DI Top 20 Rankings

The Greyhounds return more than any defending champion in recent memory, bringing back five of their top six scoring options and five of six starters at the defensive end. Dave Metzbower will be the offensive coordinator, replacing Dan Chemotti, who took the Richmond head coaching job.

Loyola's opponent in the 2012 title game, Maryland, comes in at No. 2 in the Face-Off Yearbook rankings, followed by Notre Dame, Duke and North Carolina.
