UMass Sweeps New England Lacrosse Awards
May 18, 2006 AMHERST, Mass. - UMass swept the major awards for the 2006 season of the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Senior attacker Sean Morris (Marshfield, Mass.) was named the Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Freshman goalie Doc Schneider (Massapequa, N.Y.) was named the Rookie of the Year and Greg Cannella was named the Coach of the Year. Joining Morris in the First Team were junior midfielders Brett Garber (Avon, Conn.) and Brian Jacovina (Hicksville, N.Y.) along with senior long-stick Jake Deane (Annapolis, Md.) and senior defenseman Jack Reid (Glastonbury, Conn.). Schneider was named to the second team as well. Cannella was named the New England Coach of the Year for the fourth time, also earning it in 2001, 2002 and 2005. Reid has been honored for the third year in a row. It marked Morris and Jacovina's second All-NEILA honor. The New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association is a unique and independent organization comprised of Division I, II and III Programs competing within the New England Region. The NEILA is represented by the institutions head coach, and seeks to promote the growth and development of the game throughout the New England Region. Every year the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association goes through an extensive nomination and voting process to recognize the most outstanding intercollegiate player's in the New England Region. Each team is balloted and selected by Division's I, II, and III, with the top player's receiving "1st and 2nd Team All New England" status. The balloting process also recognizes by Division's I, II, and III; New England Player of the Year, New England Rookie of the Year, and New England Coach of the Year.
