April 29, 2013
RICHMOND, Va. - UMass men's lacrosse senior attack Kyle Smith was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week on Monday afternoon, as announced by the conference office. Smith notched a single-game personal best nine points on six goals and three assists as UMass defeated Delaware, 16-8 on Friday, April 26, to help the Minutemen reach the CAA Tournament.
After fighting back and forth with the Blue Hens to earn a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, Smith exploded for four goals in the second as the Minutemen secured an 11-4 lead entering halftime. UMass needed the victory in order to remain in competition for the final seed in the CAA Tournament, while losses by Hofstra to Penn State and Saint Joseph's to Towson secured the bid for the Minutemen.
With the nine-point performance against the Blue Hens, Smith jumped to a tie for 23rd all-time in scoring in UMass men's lacrosse history with 124 points on 78 goals and 46 assists. Smith shares the award with Penn State's Jack Forster, who notched five goals and an assist as the Nittany Lions defeated Hofstra, 16-7 on Saturday, April 27.
UMass continues its season at Penn State in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament on Wednesday, May 1 at 3 p.m.
