April 7, 2003
AMHERST, Mass. - Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) and Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) were honored by the ECAC today for their roles in UMass' 11-8 win over UMBC last Saturday. Fiore was named Offensive Player of the Week and Schell was selected as Defensive Player of the Week.
Fiore scored three goals and an assist to lead the Minuteman offense to a comeback victory over the Retrievers. The points marked the 23rd straight game that Fiore has scored a point. It was also his eighth career hat trick and fourth this season. He needs four points for 100 in his career, and currently has 70 goals and 26 assists. He needs 17 goals to enter the school's top 15 for career goals. Fiore ranks third on the team with 27 points (22 g, 5 a).
Schell was the defensive star for the Minutemen, as he recorded 15 saves to guide UMass' effort. The 15 saves were the second most in his career. He has stopped over 50.0 percent of all shots in every game this year and has allowed only one team in nine games to reach double-digit scoring. Entering the weekend, Schell was in the top 10 nationally in save percentage and goals against average.
The 8-1 Minutemen will battle regional rival Yale at Garber Field on Saturday, April 12. Face-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
