Men's Lacrosse Duo Takes In Weekly CAA Honors

RICHMOND, Va. - UMass men's lacrosse midfielder Connor Mooney and attackman Nick Mariano earned the Minutemen a pair of CAA awards when Mooney was picked as the conference's player of the week and Mariano took home rookie of the week, as announced by the league on Monday afternoon.
Mooney recorded nine points via five goals and four assists as he helped Massachusetts to wins over Providence, 16-11 and No. 5 Penn State, 8-6 during the previous week. The Wilbraham, Mass., native recorded a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists against the Friars on Tuesday, March 11 - the only player in the CAA to have as many goals and assists in one game this season. He added a pair of goals to spur on the Minutemen when they traveled to University Park, Pa., and won their CAA opener on Saturday, March 15.
Mariano finished the two-game slate with four points to increase his team-leading total to 21 on the season. The Yorktown, N.Y., native helped out on one goal against Providence before he recorded three points on two goals and an assist at Penn State. After he tallied his fifth multi-goal game of the season with his performance against the Nittany Lions, Mariano has tallied 17 times through seven contests as a freshman, giving him the second-most goals among all first-year players in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse.
No. 11 Massachusetts (6-1 overall) continues its season with a trip to No. 19 Fairfield (4-2) on Tuesday, March 18 for a 3 p.m. game in Fairfield, Conn. More on the upcoming contest is available through UMassAthletics.com here.
