UMass Receiving Votes IN USILA Poll The two teams that the Minutemen beat in preseason exhibitions, Drexel and Army, are ahead of them in the others receiving votes category. UMass is set to play six teams currently in the top 20 this season: Syracuse (1), Georgetown (7), Hofstra (13), Brown (14), Loyola (17), and Albany (18) along with Penn State (RV), and Harvard (RV).
Schneider A Super Senior With one full season remaining, he stands in fourth on the UMass all-time saves list with 548. Next up is Tom LoPresti in third with 562. With a good season, he has a chance to finish his career in second on the all-time list, only trailing great Sal LoCascio who recorded an unworldly 931 stops which is the most in NCAA history. Schneider was named an Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Magazine preseason honorable mention All-American prior to the season. It marks the second All-American honor bestowed upon Schneider. The first came prior to the 2007 campaign after he led the Minutemen to a magical run to the National Championship Game in his freshman year (2006). In his first three seasons in Amherst, Schneider has been one of the top goalies in UMass lacrosse history. As a true freshman in 2006, he led the Minutemen to a 13-5 record and an appearance in the National Finals after NCAA Tournament wins over Cornell, Hofstra, and Maryland. His stellar 15 save performance against the Terrapins sent the Minutemen into the Title Game where he made 17 saves against an undefeated Virginia squad. For the effort, he was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. Also that year, he was named New England Rookie of the Year, along with Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie Team. His 220 saves during his freshman campaign marked the fourth most in UMass history. In 2007, Schneider was named a second-team All-ECAC performer, All-New England First Team, and was a Tewaaraton Trophy Candidate (an award given to the nation's top lacrosse player). Last season, Schneider posted a 59.5 save percentage and 8.42 GAA. He won a number of weekly awards including LaxNews.com College Beat National Player of the Week after a career-high 20 saves at Georgetown. He was also named ECAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week following 15 saves in a win at Penn State. Schneider also won three awards (Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week, ECAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, and UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete of the Week) after 19 saves in a season-opening win vs. Hofstra.
UMass Picked Fifth In ECAC The Georgetown Hoyes have been chosen as the favorites to capture the 2009 ECAC Lacrosse League title. The Hoyas have been picked first by league coaches for 10 straight years and have won the title seven times. Loyola, who won the ECAC title last season, were picked second with 43 points (three first place votes) while Penn State and Rutgers are tied for third. Fairfield, Hobart, and St. John's come in sixth, seventh, and eighth.

UMass To Join CAA In 2010 A realignment of men's lacrosse conferences nationally - spurred by the Big East Conference and Northeast Conference's new sponsorship of the sport - led to the changes in CAA membership. Current members Sacred Heart and Robert Morris will move to the NEC and Villanova will move to the Big East following the 2009 campaign. Yeager said that the CAA will continue to evaluate additional membership options.
Season Full Of Streaks The season started with a dominant defensive effort in an 8-4 win over the Pride. After dropping the next two, the Minutemen bounced back with a 9-8 home win over defending National Quarterfinalist Albany. The team then lost three in a row, but came back with three-consecutive ECAC victories over Penn State (7-5), St. John's (13-8), and Hobart (8-7 in OT) to get itself right back into the ECAC title race. The following week, the Minutemen dropped a hard-fought 12-8 game to #5 Georgetown. In that contest, UMass cut an 8-3 Georgetown lead to 8-7 before the Hoyas put up a strong fourth quarter for the win. Two one-goal defeats (to Fairfield and Rutgers) and a loss to #1 (and eventual National Champion) Syracuse concluded the season.
