RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team was picked to win the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Title by the conference's coaches while senior attack Will Manny earned preseason player of the year laurels as announced by the CAA on Friday afternoon. The Minutemen will look to defend their 2012 championship during the upcoming campaign while Manny will battle to retain the conference's top player award after securing the honor one year ago.
Manny was one of four Minutemen selected to the preseason all-conference listing as well, with midfielder Colin Fleming, long-stick midfielder and defenseman Ryan Hollenbaugh and defenseman Jake Smith also tallying CAA laurels on Friday.
UMass, which finished last season undefeated in CAA play, earned five of the seven first place votes and tallied 35 points to nudge Penn State into the No. 2 spot (31 points) while Drexel and Hofstra tied for third with 22. Delaware was picked fifth while Towson totaled sixth and Saint Joseph's rounded out the CAA preseason coaches poll in seventh.
Manny, a Tewaaraton Award Finalist as a junior, finished the 2012 season with 77 points on 44 goals and 33 assists while Fleming nearly doubled his 2011 production with 26 tallies and eight helpers for 34 points.
