Minutemen Trio Picked To Preseason All-CAA Listing

RICHMOND, Va. - Senior faceoff specialist Joe Calvello, senior midfielder Connor Mooney and redshirt-sophomore goalie Zach Oliveri were selected to the 2014 Preseason All-CAA Men's Lacrosse Team, as announced by the conference on Friday. The trio of Minutemen were chosen in a vote by the league's head coaches, with Calvello being one of two faceoff specialists selected to the squad while Mooney and Oliveri were given honorable mention.
Calvello completed his first season as the main faceoff specialist in 2013 with 184 victories in 316 chances (58.2 win percentage). He ranked 11th nationally with his 58.2 win percentage, the highest mark in the CAA and earned Second Team All-CAA and CAA All-Tournament Team for his efforts as a junior.
Mooney - the active leading scorer among all current Minutemen with 61 points on 43 goals and 18 assists - finished his junior year campaign with 29 points on 22 goals and seven assists. Recognized by the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) as an All-New England First Team honoree, Mooney tied for the team lead in man-up goals with five, scooped up 24 groundballs and caused five turnovers.
Oliveri, a member of the CAA All-Rookie Team in 2013, started each of UMass' 15 contests in net as a redshirt-freshman, recording an 8.63 goals-against average and .559 save percentage. The Ronkonkoma, N.Y., native totaled 861:57 between the pipes and earned 157 saves in his first season competing collegiately.
The Minutemen begin the 2014 regular season, head coach Greg Cannella's 20th as the program leader - at Army in West Point, N.Y., on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Noon. UMass hosts Harvard for its first home game on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m., after participating in the Moe's Southwest Grill Classic against Ohio State at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sunday, Feb. 16.
