Jan. 11, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team opened its 2013 preseason practice schedule at Garber Field on Friday morning, kicking off the year with conditioning and skill-related drills. The Minutemen will look to defend their 2012 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season and tournament titles during the upcoming campaign.
UMass returns 2012 Tewaaraton Award finalist Will Manny, who enters his senior season with 164 career points on 91 goals and 73 assists. Including Manny, the team leader in goals, assists and points during the previous season, the Minutemen bring back three of their top four point-scorers from one year ago, with seniors Kyle Smith (33 g, 19 a, 52 p) and Colin Fleming (26 g, 8 a, 34 p) joining Manny in spearheading the attack.
A pair of defensive starters from 2012 will also take to the field for their senior seasons beginning in February as Ryan Hollenbaugh and Jake Smith return as well. Combined, the duo scooped up 53 ground balls and caused 23 turnovers as UMass earned its 21st New England Championship in program history during last season.
Greg Cannella, the 2012 CAA Coach of the Year, enters his 19th year leading the Minutemen and will look to guide UMass to its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance under his tutelage.
After a pair of exhibitions, the Minutemen open the regular season with a game at Garber Field against Army at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tickets for all home contests are available through the UMass Ticket Office at 866-UMASS-TIX.
