No. 4 Men's Lacrosse Defeats Harvard, 11-5
April 18, 2001
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The fourth-ranked University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team remained perfect on the year with an 11-5 win over Harvard this afternoon at Jordan Field. The Minutemen are now 10-0 on the season and remain at 4-0 and in first place in the ECAC. Harvard falls to 6-5 on the season and stay at 1-3 in the Ivy League. UMass got on the board first when sophomore Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal just 1:12 into the contest. Harvard's Matt Primm netted one of his three goals on the afternoon three minutes later to knot the score at 1-1. UMass scored four of the next five goals in the half, the last coming on junior Dan Paccione's (Amityville, N.Y.) second goal of the game at the 10:49 mark of the second quarter. The Minutemen took a 6-3 lead into intermission. UMass pushed its lead out to as much as six goals early in the fourth quarter when junior Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) tallied to make the score 9-3. But Primm answered with two straight goals less than three minutes apart to trim the lead back to four. Those were the only two goals UMass would surrender in the second half, however, as they finished out the day with two more goals for the final margin of 11-5. Senior John Madigan (Latham, N.Y) and sophomore Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) led the UMass attack with two goals and an assist apiece. Paccione netted two goals, while senior Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) posted two assists.
Senior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) made 14 saves on the day, while Harvard netminder Jake McKenna made 20 stops.
The Minutemen return to action on Saturday, April 21, when they host Georgetown in an important ECAC match-up at Garber Field. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. Shots UMass - 45 Harvard - 37
