UMass Lacrosse Drops 7-4 Decision To Brown On Saturday

AMHERST, Mass. - In one of New England's best lacrosse rivalries, Brown defeated UMass, 7-4, in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. Brown's Dave Madeira tallied a hat trick in the win. Rory Pedrick scored two goals for the Minutemen. UMass falls to 1-4 overall, while Brown is now 4-1.
Madeira scored his second goal of the game with just 2:33 left in the first half to give Brown a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish.
Brown built the lead to 5-2 on goals by Jack Walsh and Thomas Muldoon in the first 4:14 of the third quarter. Pedrick scored his second of the game to cut the lead to 5-3 just 47 seconds after Muldoon's tally.
The teams played even for nearly the remainder of the quarter until Zach Caldwell's second goal of the game made it a three-goal edge again, 6-3, with just 5.6 seconds left in the third quarter.
Brett Garber's man-up goal brought UMass back to within two at 6-4 just 1:35 into the fourth. Madeira closed the scoring with his third of the game with 5:13 in regulation.
Brown goalie Jordan Burke was sensational all game with 16 saves. Doc Schneider made 12 saves for the Minutemen.
UMass outshot the Bears 35-33 and had 29 groundballs to Brown's 16.
The four-goal total was the lowest for UMass since they lost to Navy, 6-3, on March 11, 2000. UMass is also 1-4 for the first time since 1965.
UMass hosts Sacred Heart on Tuesday at Garber Field at 3 p.m. The Minutemen open ECAC play on Saturday, March 24 at No. 16 Loyola. That game kicks of UMass' WRNX 100.9 FM action.
