UMass Stumbles To Albany, 11-10
March 16, 2004
AMHERST, Mass. - Albany outscored the UMass men's lacrosse team, 8-5, in the second half to rally for an 11-10 victory over the Minutemen at Garber Field on a blustery, snowy Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops UMass' record to 2-3 overall, heading into Saturday's contest at Brown.
The two teams traded four first-period goals in a 2:30 span midway through the first period. After Albany had taken 1-0 and 2-1 leads, Chris Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) notched goals to bring the Minutemen even. However, neither team mounted much of an offensive threat for most of the first period.
The Minutemen then started being the aggressor, outscoring the Great Danes, 3-1, in the second period. Kevin Glenz (Merrick, N.Y.), Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Matt Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) all netted goals for UMass to give it a 5-3 halftime advantage.
But for the second straight game, the Minutemen failed to hold on to a halftime lead. After Ryan Connolly (North Andover, Mass.) gave UMass a 7-4 lead with 7:24 to play in the frame, Albany would score three of the last four goals of the period to stay within striking distance at 8-6. Matt Tundo would push the lead to 9-7 at the 12:47 mark after a Frant Resetarits netter for Albany. The Great Danes then scored the game's next four goals, including two by Chris Martocchia, to claim an 11-9 advantage with 3:22 to play. Sean Morris (Marshfield, Mass.), seeing his first action of the season, would net a goal with 1:25 to play to cut the lead to 11-10, but Albany goalie Kevin Rae made two of his 17 saves in the final minute to preserve the victory for the Great Danes. UMass outshot Albany, 44-27, and won 14-of-24 face-offs, but couldn't solve Rae. Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) stopped six shots for UMass.
The Minutemen will travel to Brown for a 1:00 p.m. face-off on Saturday, March 20, before returning home for a 3:00 p.m. contest with Sacred Heart on March 23.
