AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Sean Morris (Marshfield, Mass.) scored a career-high three goals as the seventh-ranked University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team (3-0, 1-0) edged No. 9 Navy (3-1, 0-1), 10-9, before 960 fans this afternoon in an ECAC thriller at Richard F. Garber Field.

UMass led 9-7 midway through the fourth quarter when the Midshipmen went on a run to tie the game. Greg Conklin scored two goals 39 second apart to even the score at nine with 5:59 remaining in regulation. UMass junior Jeff Zywicki (Nepean, Ontario) netted the game-winner with just 2:46 left, his second of the game and seventh of the season for the win. With less than 30 seconds left, Navy scooped up a ground ball and took off down the field for one last attempt to tie the game. Ian Dingman, who had already scored three times this afternoon, spun around behind the net and fired a shot that ricocheted off the pipe with less than five second remaining. The Minutemen cleared the ball out and celebrated their first conference win.

Dingman's second goal of the game put Navy up 5-2 at the 4:03 mark of the second quarter, but the Minutemen scored the next five goals to go up 7-5. Morris netted his second of the game, off a feed from senior Chris Fiore (Freeport, N.Y.) at 3:05 of the second quarter to cut the Navy lead to two at 5-3. Just 31 seconds later, junior Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) brought the Minutemen within a goal. Sophomore Chris Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) was credited with the assist on the play. Fiore then scored two goals in a 1:43 span to give UMass its first lead of the game, a 6-5 advantage at halftime. The go-ahead goal came with just 11 seconds left in the half.

In the third quarter, Zywicki gave UMass a two-goal lead just 23 seconds in. The unassisted goal was his sixth of the season. The teams played nearly 10 minutes without a goal as Conklin scored to cut the UMass lead to one at 7-6. Less than two minutes later, Morris gave UMass its two-goal cushion back with an unassisted tally. Doyle scored off a feed from Connolly to give the Maroon & White a 9-6 lead at 1:48 of the third quarter, but Dingman scored for Navy with just 11 seconds left in the frame to cut the lead to two and give the Midshipmen some momentum heading into the fourth quarter.

Morris led the Minutemen with three goals for his first career hat trick. Fiore and Zywicki each tallied two. For Navy, Conklin scored a game-high four goals, while Dingman tallied the hat trick. UMass outshot Navy, 37-27, and held a 21-18 advantage in ground balls. The Minutemen were 1-1 on man-up situations, and controlled 13 of the 24 face-offs. In the cage, sophomore Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) made 10 saves, while Seth DiNola made eight for Navy.

Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, March 15, with a 1:00 p.m. game at No. 19/20 Brown. It marks the first away game of the season for the Minutemen.
