STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team (2-1) defeated Stony Brook (0-2), by the score of 10-3 this afternoon.

Five unanswered goals gave Umass an 8-1 lead that it would not relinquish in men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y.

UMass jumped on top of the Seawolves immediately as Neil Lundberg tallied the first of his two goals of the game just 28 seconds into the contest. The Minutemen added two goals to take a 3-0 lead with 2:32 to play in the first quarter before a goal by Stony Brook's Eric Hatkewitz cut the gap to 3-1 after one period of play.

UMass took control of the game in the second and third quarters, scoring five consecutive goals to take an 8-1 lead with 10:38 to play in the third period. Goals by Stony Brook's Larry Cerasi and Adam Marksberry cut the gap to 9-3 with 6:25 remaining in the contest, but UMass tacked on the final goal of the game and ran out the last two minutes of the clock to take home the 10-3 victory.

Cerasi, Hatkewitz and Marksberry tallied the Stony Brook goals, and Jason Cappadoro added an assist. Starting goalie Sam Stockdale recorded seven saves, while Brendan Callahan stopped nine shots in relief.

Chris Doyle led UMass with three goals, and teammates Lundberg, Kevin Glenz and Ryan Connolly added two goals apiece. Bill Schell recorded 11 saves in net for the Minutemen.
