Cannella hopes Collins can win between 55-60 percent of his draws ... has performed at top of his game in several bigtime games ... conditioning the best it has ever been... he will be a big part of how the team succeeds this year... needs to be very consistent, needs to be more of a fighter. 2006 UPDATE AS A JUNIOR IN 2005: Saw action in all 16 games as starting face-off man... set UMass career records for face-off wins with 417 and face-offs taken with 862 passing Jeff Seals' marks of 409 wins and 673 draws... finished season with 48.2 win percentage (132-of-274) ... won 54 percent over the four games (50-of-93) from Harvard through Syracuse NCAA First Round game... snagged five groundballs, and caused a turnover after going 12-of-28 from the "X" in the NCAA First Round vs. Syracuse (5/15)... won 11-of-22 face-offs and had six groundballs at Rutgers (5/7)... named to the ECAC Honor Roll (5/2)... against Syracuse (4/30), won a career-best 18-of-30 from the "X" and scooped up five groundballs... dominated the "X", winning 9-13 face-offs at Harvard (4/26 )... went 6-21 in face-offs in the victory at Hobart (4/16)... won 13-17 face-offs and picked up four groundballs vs. St. John's (4/9)... collected a groundball and went 3-10 in face-offs vs. Penn State (4/2)... won 7-14 face-offs, collected two groundballs and took a shot at Loyola (3/26)... at Sacred Heart (3/22), went 9-14 and picked up four groundballs... won 9-17 on face-offs and collected two groundballs against Brown (3/19)... won 11-20 from the face-off "X" and snagged three groundballs vs. Albany (3/15)... against Stony Brook (3/12), picked up a groundball and went 5-17 from the "X"... picked up a groundball and won 3-8 face-offs vs. Yale (3/5)...went 11-22 on face-offs and picked up four groundballs in the season-opener vs. Hofstra (2/26) AS A SOPHOMORE IN 2004: Emerged as UMass' top face-off man, appearing in all 14 games, taking 245 face-offs, winning 51 percent... was second on the team in groundballs with 42... scooped up a groundball in every game but one... closed out the season with a 13-of-18 performance in the circle to go along with five groundballs for a win over Rutgers (5/8)... dominated the face-off "X", winning 7-of-10, and snagging three groundballs against Syracuse (5/1)... controlled the circle going 14-of-19 with four groundballs in a win over Manhattan (4/9)... was 11-of-24 with four groundballs in a win over Penn State (4/3)... scooped up five groundballs and went 14-of-24 on faceoffs against Albany (3/13)... won 13-of-21 face-offs and snagged a season-high seven balls in a win over Hartford (3/2). AS A FRESHMAN IN 2003: Collins became UMass' top face-off man as a freshman, battling through bouts of inconsistency, but showing flashes of dominance at the faceoff "X"... started the year strong, winning over 50 percent of his face-offs in the first six games... in the first six games, Collins was 70-of-124 (56.4 percent)... however, in the next seven games, he went 50-of-154 (32.5 percent)... after tweaking his technique thanks to the help of former UMass face-off man Jeff Seals, he won 40-of-65 (61.5 percent) in the last three games of the season... his best day came in the season opener against Sacred Heart (2/22), where he went 15-of-21 with a then-UMass season-high 10 groundballs... was 12-of-18 against Albany (3/18)... ended a three-game slump against Yale (4/12) by winning 14-of-21 face-offs against the Bulldogs... led the team in groundballs with 62, and picked up a UMass season-high 12 groundballs against Hofstra (5/11) in the NCAA Tournament... picked up six groundballs against Rutgers (5/3), and added five against Stony Brook (3/1) and Hartford (3/21)... grabbed at least one groundball in every game but one... was 26-of-42 (61.9 percent) in the NCAA Tournament, including 13-of-23 against Maryland (5/17) in the quarterfinals. BEFORE UMASS: Played for four years under John Nostrant at The Haverford School... scored 36 points (30 g, 6 a) during his senior year and won 81 percent of his face-offs... led team to the 2000 state championship, and was named All-Conference during his senior season.
