Marc Hetnik Joins UMass Hockey Program

Marc Hetnik, a 6-3, 180-pound defenseman from Brookline, Mass., has joined the UMass hockey program as a member of the Class of 2017, head coach John Micheletto announced on Monday. Hetnik spent the last two seasons for the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) after finishing his career at Catholic Memorial in West Roxbury in 2011. MORE

Brandon Wahlin, a 5-9, 175-pound forward from White Bear Lake, Minn., has signed a National Letter of Intent with the UMass hockey program, head coach John Micheletto announced on Thursday. Wahlin will join the Minutemen this fall as a member of the Class of 2017. MORE

With the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs opening up tonight, four UMass hockey alums will begin their quests to hoist the Cup over the next two days. Justin Braun, Matt Irwin, Mike Kostka and Jonathan Quick make up the largest contingent of former Minutemen in action in the postseason at one time. MORE

Former Minuteman Irwin Tapped As Sharks Rookie Of The Year

Former UMass defenseman Matt Irwin has been selected as the 2012-13 Sharks Rookie of the Year, the team announced prior to its game against the Dallas Stars last night. Irwin has played in 35 games this season, posting 12 points (six goals, six assists), which ranks third among all team defensemen and fifth in the NHL among rookie blueliners. Irwin is also tied for the League lead amongst rookie defensemen in power play goals with four and is third in goals with six. MORE

The UMass hockey program announced its 2012-13 team awards at the squad's annual banquet on Saturday afternoon. Five individuals collected honors, including Branden Gracel who was named team MVP in recognition of his stellar junior campaign. MORE
