AMHERST, Mass. - After picking up a pair of victories last weekend, junior goaltender Steve Mastalerz has been named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week and UMass Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday. The Minutemen were also recognized as the Hockey East Team of the Week after sweeping their road series at Colgate last weekend, 2-0 and 3-2.
Mastalerz collects his third Hockey East accolade of the season and fourth Defensive Player of the Week nod from the league in his career. His UMass honor is his second of the season as he will be recognized at Wednesday's UMass Sports Luncheon, held from 12-1:15 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. The cost of the lunch is $13 with free parking available at the rear of the building. This week's guest speakers will be Executive Associate Athletic Director Tim Kenney and Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations John Sinnett.
In net for both wins last weekend, including his third career shutout, Mastalerz stopped 58 of the 60 shots he faced over the two games for a .967 save percentage and posted a goals-against average of 1.00. He made 25 saves on Saturday afternoon's 2-0 victory and followed up with 33 on Sunday.
Over the weekend, Mastalerz surpassed his previous career highs for games (15) and minutes played (850:56) in a season. He currently holds a 2.50 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage over 888:24, spanning 16 contests.
The Minutemen extend their winning streak to three over the weekend, the first time since the program's reinstatement that a UMass squad has won three straight with all three contests having been played on the road. The team has also killed off 18 consecutive penalties during the streak with a perfect 13-for-13 performance last weekend that included going 9-for-9 in Sunday's 3-2 victory.
