Dec. 9, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman forward Ray Pigozzi has been selected as the Hockey East Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Pigozzi earns his first conference honor of his career, the fourth collected by a member of the Minutemen this season.
Pigozzi helped UMass to a weekend split on the road at #13/11 Notre Dame last Friday and Saturday, assisting on four of six goals by the Minutemen against the Fighting Irish. With a pair of helpers in each contest, the Evanston, Ill., native logged the second and third multi-point games of his rookie campaign.
On Saturday night, Pigozzi set up the game-winning goal on the power play with 2:47 remaining in regulation to help UMass to its first road victory and first win over a ranked opponent this season.
With three goals and eight assists, Pigozzi is currently tied for second on the squad in scoring with 11 points through 17 games. In Hockey East play, he has seven points (2g, 5a) to tie him for the league lead in freshmen scoring and 11th in points among all players.
