UMass Hockey's Haight Garners Pair Of Weekly Awards
Nov. 18, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass hockey freshman goaltender Mac Haight has been named the Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week and Co-UMass Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday. It marks the first two career honors for Haight, who shares his UMass accolade with freshman Charlotte Verelst of the field hockey team.
Haight and Verelst will be recognized at this week's UMass Sports Luncheon, which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. Guest speakers this week will be head coach John Micheletto and a member of the football coaching staff.
Filling in for the injured Steve Mastalerz, Haight made the first two starts of his career and posted a 1.92 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage against #7 Boston College, who came into last weekend with the No. 1-ranked offense in the nation at 5.00 goals per-game. Haight stopped 51 of the 61 shots he faced over the two contests, including 31 saves in Thursday's matchup.
On Friday, he made 26 saves to help lead the Minutemen to a 2-2 tie against the Eagles, including stopping the final 21 shots he faced in the contest with 15 saves in the second period alone.
Verelst provided a timely goal for the UMass field hockey team against No. 7 nationally-ranked Virginia last Friday, Nov. 16, to help defeat the Cavaliers, 4-3 in overtime. Her game-winning tally, scored unassisted in the 81st minute, sent the Minutewomen to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals for the first time since the 2000 season. After the squad rallied from a trio of one-goal deficits during regulation to force the overtime period, Verelst handled the scoring play alone to earn UMass the victory. The Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Rookie of the Year dribbled into the circle, sent a shot off the legs of a Virginia defender in front of her, gathered her own rebound and fired her next attempt into the top-left side of the cage netting to seal the upset win.
