Yevenko & Morrissey Share UMass Athlete Of The Week Honors
Nov. 7, 2011
AMHERST, Mass. - Women's soccer senior forward Julie Morrissey and hockey freshman Oleg Yevenko have been named Co-UMass Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Monday. The duo will be honored at the UMass Weekly Sports Luncheon, on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 12:15 p.m., in the Campus Center, room 1009.
Last Thursday, Morrissey scored the game-winning goal in the Minutewomen's 3-1 victory over St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinal, UMass' first win in the conference tournament since 1997. The following night, UMass knocked off top-seeded La Salle with Morrissey providing the lone tally in the 1-0 win that sent the Minutewomen to the Atlantic 10 Championship match for the first time in 14 years. The nationally-ranked #23 Explorers were previously one of just four undefeated teams in the nation.
Morrissey, who was one of three Minutewomen named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team, finished the year by surpassing her previous career highs from her freshman season at Cincinnati in goals and points with nine and 19, respectively. UMass' leading scorer this fall, Morrissey finished the year with six game-winning goals, good for fourth all-time in program history for a single season. The Minutewomen finished the year at 14-5-2, the program's best year since last capturing the Atlantic 10 title in 1997.
Yevenko made his first collegiate goal count as he scored the game-winner against No. 1 Boston College this past Saturday. He finished +1 for the two-game weekend and took no penalties. The freshman defensman's goal helped snap a 12-game losing streak to the Eagles and marked the first time since Nov. 2008 that UMass had defeated a team ranked No. 1 nationally.
