Nov. 4, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - After backstopping the Minutemen to a 1-0-1 weekend of Hockey East action vs. Maine, junior goaltender Steve Mastalerz has been named Co-Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week and Co-UMass Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Mastalerz earns his second honor of the season from Hockey East, while sharing his UMass accolade with Meriza Werenski of the women's swimming and diving squad.
Both Mastalerz and Werenski will be recognized at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday, Nov. 6, beginning at noon in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. The speakers for this week's luncheon are field hockey head coach Carla Tagliente, women's basketball asssistant coach Jen MacAulay and a member of the football coaching staff.
Mastalerz helped UMass earn its first three Hockey East points of the season, turning aside 64 of 66 shots faced for a .970 save percentage against the Black Bears as the Minutemen recorded a 1-1 tie and a 2-1 win at the Mullins Center this past weekend. He logged a 0.96 GAA over the two contests and did not allow an even strength goal as both Maine tallies came on the power play, one during a 5-on-3. Mastalerz's 38 saves on Saturday marked a season best and were two shy of his career high.
After giving up seven goals in the opening weekend of the season, he has posted a 1.65 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage over past six games, letting up just three even strength goals in the span of 326:48.
Mastalerz currently ranks second in the nation in total saves (217) and 14th in save percentage (.931) for the year.
UMass is back in action this Friday, Nov. 8, for the first game of a home-and-home with New Hampshire set for 7:30 p.m. in Durham, N.H.
