UMass Radio Shows and Games To Air Statewide
Aug. 16, 2010
Boston-based radio station "1510 The Zone" will carry game and coaches shows broadcasts for UMass football, men's basketball and hockey this season, the Athletic Department announced. WWZN (AM 1510) joins a four-station UMass Sports Network in 2010-11 that will be heard throughout the state of Massachusetts and in portions of New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maine.
AM 1510 will carry the entire Minutemen football schedule as well as approximately 20 men's basketball and 10 hockey contests. For the first time in at least 15 years the weekly UMass coaches shows will be broadcast in the state capital, as select Bud Light UMass Football, Basketball and Hockey Shows will air on "The Zone."
"The UMass athletic administration continues to make it a priority to have our network broadcasts on in Boston," said Manager of Broadcast Services Josh Maurer. "Having our games and coaches shows on "The Zone" gives UMass a strong radio presence on a sports-oriented station with a terrific signal."
WWZN, a 50,000-watt political and sports-talk station, covers the entire Boston area day and night. "The Zone," known during daytime programming as "Revolution Boston", was the home of Notre Dame football before signing with UMass. It also serves as the radio home of Boston University hockey and men's basketball.
"We are excited to form an alliance with UMass Athletics," said Jeff Santos, Vice President of Programming for AM 1510. "The Minutemen put competitive teams on the field, court and ice every year and we look forward to broadcasting their games. Our hope is to have a long-term relationship with one of the finest programs in the country."
WRNX (100.9 FM), based in Springfield, is celebrating its ninth consecutive season as the flagship radio home for UMass sports. WRNX carries all men's basketball, football and hockey games in addition to coaches shows for all three sports throughout western Massachusetts.
WCRN (830 AM) in Worcester returns with its mammoth 50,000-watt signal to carry the majority of the men's basketball and football schedule to central Massachusetts. The station reaches into southern New Hampshire and Maine and as far south as Providence, Rhode Island.
WATD (95.9 FM), based in the South Shore of Massachusetts and a part of the UMass Sports Network since 1998, will continue to carry football and men's basketball contests. Additionally, all UMass games and coaches shows will have free streaming audio on-line through UMassAthletics.com.
Maurer returns for his third season as the play-by-play voice of UMass football and men's basketball, and is joined by former Minutemen Matt Goldstein and Rene Ingoglia as football analysts. Tim Kenney, Tim Collins and Glenn Wong all return as rotating color analysts for basketball broadcasts.
Second-year hockey play-by-play voice John Hennessy remains teamed with veteran color analyst Brock Hines for the entire schedule on the ice. Hennessy will also host football pregame, halftime and postgame shows, while Adam Frenier again reports from the sidelines during football and hockey broadcasts.
The broadcast schedule begins September 2nd at 7 pm with the season premiere of the Bud Light UMass Football Show from the Hangar Pub & Grill. Two days later UMass football hosts William & Mary, one of the pre-season national favorites, with pre-game coverage beginning at 3 pm.
