AMHERST, Mass. - This Friday, Aug. 14, fans can chat live online with rising hockey sophomore Casey Wellman. The California native led Hockey East in Rookie Scoring and was named to the All-Rookie Team. The chat will start at 10:45 AM and fans will be able to submit questions for Casey to answer.

Earlier this summer, Wellman took part of the Nashville Predators Prospect Camp where he earned praise for his physical conditioning.

Wellman led the league in Rookie Scoring with 11 goals and 22 assists which also ranked 10th nationally among freshmen. The native of Brentwood, Calif., finished second for the Minutemen in scoring and was tied for the team lead with a plus-10 rating.

During the course of the season, Wellman was honored as the January Hockey East Player of the Month, was a two-time Player of the Month Runner-Up, and was named league Rookie of the Week on three occasions.

He finished the season tied for eighth in Hockey East for points, tied for fifth in assists, and fourth in power play goals (6). He had two game-winning goals on the year including the dramatic overtime game-winner against Boston College on Nov. 22. He had a career-high four assists in league play in the Oct. 31 win over Providence and had seven multi-point games.

Wellman played for two seasons with the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders (USHL) prior to UMass. He tallied 30 goals and 39 assists in 118 games with the Rough Riders including 22 goals and 23 assists in 2007-08.

The Minutemen finished 2008-09 with a 16-20-3 overall record and qualified for the Hockey East Play-Offs for the seventh consecutive year and 12th overall. For the first-time ever, UMass forced a three-game series as the seventh seed in the quarterfinals against second-seeded No. 4 Northeastern. In 2009-10, UMass will return five of its top eight scorers including Hockey East Co-Scoring Champion James Marcou and Wellman.
