AMHERST, Mass. - UMass led the way with 13 scholar-athletes earning spots on the Hockey East All-Academic Team as announced by the league on Monday. Both Martin Nolet and Brett Watson were named Distinguished Scholar-Athletes after posting 3.0 grade point averages for each semester of their careers.

This marks the fifth consecutive season that UMass has posted 10-or-more student-athletes on the All-Academic Team. The 13 players named to the team also ties the program-record previously set following the 2006-07 season.

Freshman Djan Lefebvre was also named to the Academic All-Star Team posting the highest individual GPA among league defensemen.

All told, 79 student-athletes were named to the 2009-2010 All-Academic Team in the league's 26th season of play. Each student-athlete achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which he was actively competing.

Following the University of Massachusetts was the University of Maine with 12 student-athletes making the grade, while Merrimack College placed 10 honorees on the squad. UMass-Lowell and Providence College each placed nine recipients on the team in 2009-2010.

The league also boasted seven student-athletes that received "Distinguished Scholar" status. Those earning "Distinguished Scholar" status achieved a 3.0 or better in each semester over four varsity seasons. Boston College senior forward Ben Smith (Avon, Conn.), Massachusetts defenseman Martin Nolet (Quebec City, Que.) and forward Brett Watson (Media, Pa.), UMass-Lowell forward Paul Worthington (Langhorne, Pa.), Merrimack goaltender Andrew Braithwaite (Kingston, Ont.) and forward J.C. Robitaille (Des Ruisseaux, Que.), along with Northeastern senior forward Greg Costa (Crownsville, Md.) all earned All-Academic status in four seasons.

Merrimack's Braithwaite also earned 4.00 GPA on the year to earn Hockey East Top-Scholar Athlete honors for the third straight season with the Warriors.
