UMass Hockey Adds Four For 2012-13
June 14, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - Recruits Connor Doherty, Evan Stack, K.J. Tiefenwerth and Shane Walsh will join the UMass hockey program for the upcoming 2012-13 season, head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon announced on Thursday. The group, comprised of three forwards and one defenseman, will all take the ice as freshmen with the Mass Attack this fall.
"We think this group will compliment the returning student-athletes we have very well," said Cahoon. "The members of this class bring quickness, foot speed and puck skills and will add another dimension to our current team, while contributing both offensively and defensively."
Doherty, a 6-2, 190-pound defenseman, is coming off a highly successful season with the Junior Bruins of the EJHL. The Holden, Mass., native earned a 2011-12 EJHL All-Star nod and finished the year with 18 points on four goals and 14 assists in 35 games.
"Doherty is a solid defender with good physical stature and a strong stick. He comes to us out of a program that has a history of producing quality defensemen."
Stack, a 6-1, 185-pound right winger, served as team captain this past season with the Merritt Centennials of the British Columbia Hockey League. He finished the year 15th in the BCHL with 32 goals, which included six game-winners, and registered 29 assists over 60 games. The Calgary, Alberta, native totaled four goals and three assists over nine playoff games and was tabbed team MVP upon the conclusion of the season.
"Stack has the ability to score goals and is good around the net. He is a big body who will be a great physical presence for us in front."
Tiefenwerth, a 5-9, 160-pound center/winger, was a teammate of Doherty's with the Junior Bruins and served as the squad's captain in 2011-12. The Bellmore, N.Y., native ranked third in the EJHL this season with 77 points and had the sixth-highest goals total in the league with 30, while also contributing 47 assists in 43 games. Over four playoff contests, he scored twice with one being a game-winner. With 57 points in 2010-11, Tiefenwerth was named the EJHL Rookie of the Year. In 2009-10, he helped Avon Old Farms to a New England Division I Prep Championship alongside current Minuteman Michael Pereira.
"Tiefenwerth has great vision on the ice. He is a playmaker who can set up his teammates, but will also score his share of goals."
Walsh, a 5-10, 170-pound left winger from West Roxbury, Mass., logged 15 points on eight goals and seven assists over 10 games with the South Shore Kings of the EJHL after beginning the year with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. With Dubuque, Walsh saw action in 23 games and totaled 12 points on five goals and seven assists. He finished the season by scoring twice in six playoff games with South Shore.
"Walsh possesses power play-type skills. With his ability to score, we can expect he will contribute offensively for us."
