Five former UMass hockey alumni, four as players and one as a head coach, have reached the postseason with their respective ECHL clubs as the Kelly Cup Playoffs kicked off on Thursday night.
T.J. Syner and his club, the Reading Royals, are looking for a repeat of last year's Kelly Cup Championship. Syner, who had 44 points in 56 games in his second season with Reading, is joined by fellow former Minuteman Marvin Degon on the Royals' roster. Degon had 34 points in 55 games during the regular season.
In his fourth season as head coach, former Minuteman Dean Stork has led the Greenville Road Warriors to a record of 39-27 and a fourth straight postseason berth. Fellow UMass alum Michael Marcou is in his second year playing in Greenville and compiled 29 points in 65 games for the Road Warriors this season.
Former UMass captain Rocco Carzo will be making his first postseason appearance of his professional career as a member of Ontario Reign. Traded to Ontario from Florida during the 2013-14 season, Carzo appeared in 17 games for the Reign and totaled 18 points on five goals and 13 assists.
