Butler & Syner Earn Winter Scholar-Athlete Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior diver Michaela Butler and hockey senior forward T.J. Syner have been selected as the female and male UMass Winter Scholar-Athletes for 2011-12. The pair was recently honored at the UMass Weekly Sports Luncheon.
Butler, a Kinesiology major, was named the 2012 Atlantic 10 Women's Most Outstanding Diver of the Year after winning gold metals in both the one and three-meter dives at the A-10 Championship meet. She went undefeated during the regular season on the boards and competed in the NCAA Zone A Championship, taking 11th in the three-meter dive (534.60) and 12th in the one-meter dive (479.85).
Syner served as team co-captain this past season for the Minutemen and was tabbed a Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star after leading UMass in scoring with 37 points, including a team-high 24 assists. The Management major totaled a career-best 13 goals on the year and ranked eighth in Hockey East in scoring with 1.03 points per-game, tied for 41st nationally.
Syner was one of 21 semifinalists for the 60th Walter Brown Award, as announced by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. The Walter Brown Award is given annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England. He was also a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award.
