Nolet And Upperco Named UMass/Dinn Bros. Winter Scholar-Athletes

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass hockey defenseman Martin Nolet and UMass diver Karen Upperco have been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Winter Scholar-Athlete Award Winners. Both student-athletes played essential roles this past winter season for their respective teams and were honored for their academic success at Wednesday's Sports Luncheon. Nolet finished his junior season with a 3.955 grade point average, while Upperco finished her UMass career with a 3.513 GPA.
Nolet was one of UMass' top defensive players this season finishing with two goals and seven assists in 38 games. His seven assists were a career-high for a season. The psychology/pre-med major saw time on both the power play and penalty killing units for the Minutemen. He had one multi-point game this season with one goal and an assist in UMass' 4-3 overtime victory over Boston College on November 22. In the classroom, Nolet is a second-semester Teaching Assistant for an Abnormal Psychology class and also helps in the research of cognitive disorders.
Upperco was named the Atlantic 10 Diver of the Year for the third-time this past season and earned the A-10 Women's Swimming & Diving Student-Athlete of the Year honor as well. She leaves UMass with the A-10 Championship Records in the three-meter dive (580.25) and in the one-meter dive (520.60). In the UMass record book, she holds the top spot on the three-meter board (310.50) and is third all-time on the one-meter board. In her career, Upperco also made four straight appearances at the NCAA Regional Diving Meet.
She finished the 2008-09 season with 12 first-place finishes and set a new Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool Record on the three-meter board (297.45) in the Senior Day meet versus Colgate.
