UMass Hockey's Pereira Signs ATO With Worcester Sharks
March 15, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - - UMass hockey senior Michael Pereira has signed an amateur tryout agreement (ATO) with the Worcester Sharks, the organization announced on Saturday. The forward becomes the third Minuteman senior to sign with an American Hockey League (AHL) franchise this week, joining classmates Conor Sheary and Joel Hanley.
"I'd like to thank everyone for the support," said Pereira. "It's an unbelievable experience and I'm grateful to join and play for the Sharks' organization in Worcester."
Pereira leaves UMass with his named littered throughout the school's record book and, on Jan. 25 at Merrimack, became just the fifth player to reach both the 100-point and 50-goal milestones. In 135 career games, he amassed 53 goals and 54 assists, 107 points, ranking fourth all-time in career goals and tied for sixth in points. He also finished his career ranked second in program history for career power-play goals (21), tied for eighth in shorthanded goals (3) and tied for 12th in game-winning goals.
Pereira posted double-digit goal and 20-plus point totals over all four years of his collegiate career, including 22 points (11g, 11a) in 34 games as a senior. He led UMass with eight power-play goals in 2013-14, equaling the fifth-best single season total all-time for the Minutemen.
Pereira is expected to dress for the Sharks this weekend. Worcester plays at Bridgeport tonight, March 15, at 7 p.m., and hosts Manchester tomorrow, March 16, at 3:00 p.m. He becomes the 26th former Minuteman currently playing professional hockey as UMass has alumni in the professional ranks around the globe in nine different countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. Among the group, there are five former Minutemen currently playing in the NHL. Pereira will be the fifth UMass hockey alum in the AHL, joining former teammates Conor Allen, Hanley, Danny Hobbs and Sheary.
