Feb. 23, 2009
AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore hockey forward James Marcou and softball's senior pitching sensation Brandice Balschmiter were named UMass/Dinn Bros. co-Athletes of the Week on Monday after their outstanding performances over the weekend. Marcou tallied five points in the Minutemen's two-game sweep of Maine while Balschmiter and the Minutewomen defeated the defending national champions, fanning 20 total batters over the weekend's Cathedral City Classic.
Marcou, who also earned Reebok Hockey East Player of the Week honors this week, notched his 11th multi-point game of the season after assisting three of the four UMass goals in Friday's 4-3 win against the Black Bears and then lending a helping hand again on Saturday as he assisted UMass' first goal and knocked in their third goal himself in yet another 4-3 win against Maine. The Kings Park, N.Y. native now leads Hockey East in assists and ranks second in the Conference for points. Marcou also moved up nationally as he now ranks sixth in the country in points, and third in assists.
Balschmiter, who was also named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week this week, earned her 96th and 97th career victories after grabbing wins against the defending national champion Arizona State Sun Devils as well as N.C. State, striking out a total of 20 batters over the weekend, one of which was the #1 overall pick in the National Pro Fastpitch Draft, Kaitlin Cochran, who she sent back to the dugout three times. Blaschmiter, a Newark, N.Y. native, tossed six innings of three-hit shutout ball against N.C. State, recording four strikeouts in the victory while she later carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Arizona State, finishing the game with a complete-game, two-hit, eight-strikeout shutout. This marks the sixth time in her career that she has earned the UMass weekly honor.
Hockey will return to the ice Friday, Feb. 27 to take on top ranked Boston University at home while softball will be on the road again, this time headed to the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. where they will face Nebraska in the first of five games over the weekend.
Marcou and Balschmiter will be honored this Wednesday, Feb.25, at the UMass Sports Luncheon which will be held in the Amherst Room at 1009 Campus Center starting at Noon. This week's guest speakers will be issuing the fall academic awards at the Luncheon, which runs from Noon to 1:00 p.m. with a salad-to-dessert buffet for just $10.00.
