Trio Shares UMass Athlete Of The Week Honors
Jan. 27, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - Hockey senior forward Michael Pereira and women's track and field's junior Rachel Hilliard and freshman Heather MacLean have been named Co-UMass Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Monday. The trio will honored at this Wednesday's UMass Sports Luncheon, which will be held from 10:15-11:30 a.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. The guest speaker will be hockey head coach John Micheletto.
Pereira posted four points with three goals and one assist in a weekend split with Merrimack, including two multi-point efforts. After logging a goal and an assist in Friday's 5-2 victory over the Warriors, Pereira scored twice on the power play in Saturday's contest to record his 50th career goal and 100th career point. He became just the fifth player in UMass history to reach both the 50-goal and 100-point benchmarks as he now ranks fourth on the program's all-time list for career goals and is 11th in points. The pair of power-play tallies also brings Pereira to within two of the UMass record as he has 20 for his career.
Competing at the Northeastern Indoor Games last Friday, Hilliard completed the 3,000 meter race in just 9-minutes, 52.04-seconds to finish second overall. The time stands as the fifth best in program history in the 3,000 meter run and qualifies her for the New England and Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship.
After her cross country season was cut short by injury, MacLean has been undefeated in the 800 meter run in her first three indoor track, grabbing her third first-place finish in the event at Northeastern this past weekend. MacLean finished the race in just 2-minutes, 14.69-seconds.
