Jan. 19, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. - A Hockey East sweep and a new school record in the shot put gives Paul Dainton of the hockey team and Lisa Wilson of the women's track and field team UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete of the Week honors. Dainton stood tall in goal for two wins over UMass Lowell to move the Mass Attack into third place in the league standings. Wilson set a new school record in the shot put at the Boston University Quad Meet.
Dainton also earned Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts. He started both games against UMass Lowell stopping 59-of-62 shots for a 1.50 goals against average and a .952 save percentage. The Minutemen were a perfect 10-for-10 on the penalty kill as well with 15 saves in the man down situations.
In Friday's 3-2 win, Dainton made 31 saves, while on Saturday he made 28 stops for the 2-1 road win. His 31 save effort was the eighth time this season he has posted 30-or-more saves in a game.
Wilson led the way for the women's track team which finished second at the Boston University Quad Meet. The Holden, Mass., native set a UMass all-time record in the shot put and took third in the weight throw to tally 15 points for the Minutewomen.
In the shot put, Wilson's record setting throw of 45-feet, 0.25-inches was good for first place overall and qualified her for both the ECAC Indoor Championships and New England Indoor Championships. The defending Atlantic 10 and New England discus champion for outdoor track also qualified for the New England Indoor Championships in the weight throw with a third-place mark of 51-feet, 11.75 inches. That mark now ranks third best all-time mark at UMass.
Both student-athletes will be honored on Wednesday at the Weekly Sports Luncheon which will be held in Room 1009 of the Campus Center. The featured guest speakers will be men's basketball head coach Derek Kellogg and hockey head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon.
