TROY, N.Y. - Ryan Shields scored the game-winning goal, 4:00 into the first overtime period to lead Rensselaer to a 3-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts in the championship game of the 51st Rensselaer/HSBC Holiday Tournament tonight at Houston Field House.

Shields knocked in a loose puck in the slot to give Rensselaer the 3-2 victory. Ben Barr assisted on the goal.

Following a scoreless first period, Rensselaer got on the board 9:10 into the second when Blake Pickett scored an unassisted goal. Pickett picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and split the Massachusetts defensemen before netting his first career goal.

Massachusetts tied the game, 1-1, less than three minutes later when junior Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored on the power play. Senior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) took a feed from freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) before passing to Turner in the slot. Turner scored his team leading seventh goal of the season with a wrist shot. The Minutemen took the lead at the end of the second period when Mauldin scored with five seconds remaining. Mauldin took a feed from junior Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) who skated in from the point. Senior Toni S?derholm (Helsinki, Finland) also assisted the power-play goal.

Rensselaer tied the game in the opening minute of the third period when Ryan Shields scored from the slot. Ben Barr and Jim Henkel assisted on the goal.

Massachusetts senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 31 saves in the net, while Rensselaer goaltender Kevin Kurk made 32 saves.

The loss drops Massachusetts to 7-11-0 overall, while the victory improves Rensselaer to 7-5-1 overall. Johnson and sophomore defenseman Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) were named to the all-tournament team for the Minutemen. Massachusetts returns to action on Friday, Jan. 4, in a 8:05 p.m. game at No. 1 St. Cloud State.
