BOSTON, Mass. - No. 7 Boston University erased an early two-goal deficit to defeat the University of Massachusetts, 3-2, in Hockey East action this afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.

Massachusetts got on the board at the 6:56 mark of the first period when freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) scored a shorthanded goal. Mauldin took a feed from sophomore defenseman Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) and beat Boston University goaltender Sean Fields with a backhand shot in close. It was Mauldin's fourth goal and second shorthanded tally of the season.

The Minutemen extended their lead to 2-0 when junior defenseman Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) scored at the 8:05 mark of the first period. Jalkanen, who had just come out of the penalty box, took a pass from senior Darcy King (Barrie, Ontario) that sent him in alone on Fields. Jalkanen scored on a shot through the five-hole.

Boston University got a goal back in a penalty filled second period. Chris Dyment scored a power-play goal with a slapshot from the point at the 9:50 mark. Ryan Whitney assisted on the goal.

The Terriers scored two quick goals at the beginning of the third period to take the lead. Brian Collins netted the tying goal off an errant UMass clear at the 5:49 mark of the period. Jack Baker then scored just 26 seconds later to give the Terriers a 3-2 lead. Baker's goal was a deflection of a Dyment shot from the point. John Sabo also assisted on the goal.

Senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 31 saves for the Minutemen, while Fields made 25 saves for the Terriers. The victory improves Boston University to 10-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 6-10-0 overall and 2-7-0 in Hockey East.
