Hockey Falls to No. 7 Boston University, 5-2

AMHERST, Mass. - Boston University scored the last three goals to break open a tie game en route to a 5-2 victory over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action tonight at the William D. Mullins Center.
The No. 7 Terriers got on the board first when Justin Maiser scored a little over three minutes into the game. Mike Pandolfo and Freddy Meyer assisted on the goal. Boston University increased its lead to 2-0 at the beginning of the second period. Gregg Johnson scored off a feed from Kenny Magowan just over two minutes into the period. Frantisek Skladany also assisted on the goal.
Massachusetts cut into the Terriers lead when freshman Tim Vitek (Dresden, Ontario) scored a power-play goal. Vitek, who was camped just outside the crease, deflected in a pass from sophomore Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec). Senior defenseman Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) also assisted on the goal. The Minutemen tied the game, 2-2, later in the period when sophomore Scott Horvath (West Redding, Conn.) scored off a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle. Kuiper made a breakout pass to freshman Peter Trovato (North Attleboro, Mass.) at center ice. Trovato gave it to Horvath who was skating through the neutral zone.
Boston University regained the lead with 25 seconds remaining in the second period when Pandolfo netted a power-play goal. Maiser and Bryan Miller were credited with the assists on the goal. The Terriers added two more goals in the third period to make the final score 5-2. Skladany scored the first of the two goals when he scored on a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle at the 9:49 mark. Pandolfo added an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining. Ryan Whitney assisted on both of the third period goals.
Senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 23 saves for the Minutemen, while Sean Fields made 21 saves for the Terriers. The victory improves Boston University to 9-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 6-9-0 overall and 2-6-0 in Hockey East.
Massachusetts returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 9, in a rematch with Boston University at Walter Brown Arena in Boston. The Minutemen and Terriers will faceoff at 3:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on Fox Sports Net New England.
