Hockey Falls to Maine, 6-1, in Hockey East Action

AMHERST, Mass. - Maine scored three second period goals en route to a 6-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts in Hockey East action tonight at the William D. Mullins Center. Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Colin Shields scored during a five-on-three advantage less than a minute into the second period. Massachusetts cut the lead to 2-1 when junior Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Freshman Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) and senior Toni Söderholm (Helsinki, Finland) assisted on the five-on-three power-play goal. The Black Bears responded quickly when Niko Dimitrakos scored a shorthanded goal to give Maine a 3-1 lead. The Black Bears would extend their lead to 4-1 when Lucas Lawson scored with less than a minute to play in the second period. Tom Reimann scored for Maine during a four-on-four situation 2:57 into the third period to give the Black Bears a four-goal lead. Reimann scored again later in the period to make the final score 6-1 in favor of Maine. The victory improves Maine to 7-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in Hockey East, while the loss drops Massachusetts to 6-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in Hockey East. Massachusetts returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, when it travels to Boston College for a 7:00 p.m. game.
