AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts (4-8-0, 2-5-0 Hockey East) fell to No. 13 Denver (6-6-2, 3-3-2 WCHA) on Saturday by the score of 4-0 at the Mullins Center. The Pioneers broke the game open in the first with three goals to anchor the win. The Minutemen are idle for 10 days before resuming league play on Tuesday, Dec. 6 when they host Merrimack at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.

Denver made it a 1-0 game during their first man-advantage opportunity, with UMass' Chris Davis in the box at 8:52 for hooking. Ryan Dingle's initial shot from up top rebounded out in front of the Minuteman net to Gabe Gauthier, who put it home for the score. The goal was also assisted by Adrian Veideman.

The Pioneers quickly extended the lead to two with Matt Carle's goal at 10:54. Steven Cook cleanly won the faceoff in the offensive zone back to Chris Butler, who then passed it over to Carle for the shot. The tally was the sixth of the season for the Anchorage native. The third DU goal came at 14:28 from Ryan Helgason, assisted by Veideman and Carle to close out the period scoring.

Denver added to its lead with Veideman's first goal and third point of the game at 16:16. The shot off a pass by Patrick Mullen hit Jon Quick and slowly slid over the goal line for the four-goal cushion. Gauthier started the play deep in the DU end for his second point of the night and the only goal of the stanza.

Neither team scored in the third, as Peter Mannino earned his first shutout of the season. Final shots were 37-27 DU. The Pioneers were 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Minutemen were 0-for-3.
