HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Craig MacDonald (Canton, Mass.) scored two goals and senior goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) made 29 saves to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Dartmouth tonight in college hockey action at the Thompson Arena.

Freshman Craig MacDonald (Canton, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Minutemen at the 15:09 mark of the first period with a power play goal. Freshman Justin Rafferty (Clifton Park, N.Y.) moved the puck to junior forward Jimmy Callahan (Lexington, Mass.) behind the net. Callahan made a pass to MacDonald, who scored from just outside the crease. It was MacDonald's third goal of the season.

Massachusetts extended its lead to 3-0 with two second period goals. Senior Martin Miljko (Etobicoke, Ontario) netted the first on a wrist shot from just inside the blue line 1:59 into the period. Sophomore Thomas Pöck (Klagenfurt, Austria) and Rafferty assisted on the goal. MacDonald netted his second goal of the game when he deflected a Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec) shot from the point during a four-on-three Minuteman power play. Junior defenseman Samuli Jalkanen (Helsinki, Finland) also assisted on the goal.

The Minutemen took a 4-0 lead 12:28 into the third period when Jalkanen scored a power-play goal from the slot. Senior defenseman Toni Söderholm (Helsinki, Finland) found Jalkanen cuting through the slot. Jalkanen fired a shot top corner. Pöck also assisted on the goal.

Johnson recorded his second straight shutout and the fifth of his career. Johnson has a scoreless streak of 167:51, going back to the first period against UMass Lowell on Nov. 17. His five career shutouts are a UMass record.

The victory improves Massachusetts to 6-6-0 overall, while the loss drops Dartmouth to 4-2-1 overall.

Massachusetts returns to action on Friday, Nov. 30, when it hosts Hockey East league rival Maine in a 7:00 p.m. game at the William D. Mullins Center.
