AMHERST, Mass. - Five different players scored a goal as the University of Massachusetts ice hockey team downed Iona College, 5-3 in a non-conference game this eveining at the Mullins Center. With, the win, the Minutemen (5-4-0) move over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Iona that got on the board first when Jamie Carroll took a centering pass from Tim Krueckl and slid it under Tim Warner (Waltham, Mass.) for a power-play netter at the 16:28 mark. Brent Williams also assisted on the play.

But UMass knotted the game late at one late in the first period. The Minutemen won a draw in the Iona end, back to Thomas Pöck (Klagenfurt, Austria). Pöck fired a slapshot that was saved by Iona goalie, Mike Fraser, but Greg Mauldin (Holliston, Mass.) slid the rebound under Fraser at the 19:30 mark. The goal was Mauldin's team-leading fourth of the season.

Iona then retook the lead when Mark Hallam fired a slapshot from the left wing that beat Warner top-shelf. Jean-Paul Chaput assisted on the goal at the 2:06 mark for a 2-1 cushion. The Minutemen had chances to tie the game midway through the second period with back-to-back power plays, but couldn't convert on either of the chances. UMass then retied the game at the 13:45 mark of the second period when senior forward Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) was left all alone in front of the net. Turner received a feed from Chris Capraro (Medford, Mass.) and stuck the puck in the top right corner. Mike Warner (Waltham, Mass.) also assisted on the play.

UMass carried over a power play from the second period to score its third goal. Pöck let a wrister go from just inside the blue-line, that was deflected in front of the net by Warner at the 54-second mark. to give the Minutemen a 3-2 lead. Turner also recorded an assist on the play. Less than a minute later, UMass had a goal disallowed after a lenghthy discussion that would have given the Minutemen a two-goal cushion. The Minutemen would get that two-goal lead at the 7:13 mark of the third period when Peter Trovato (North Attleboro, Mass.) fired a slapshot low from outside the right circle to beat Fraser. Matt Walsh (Arlington, Mass.) assisted on the goal. Iona narrowed the gap to 4-3 at the 10:15 mark, but Stephen Werner (Chevy Chase, Md.) put the proverbial nail in the coffin as he took the puck the length of the ice and flipped in a backhand shot for a 5-3 lead at the 12:22 mark.

 

 

Sophomore Tim Warner (Waltham, Mass.) stopped 15 shots in earning his fiirst win of the season in the UMass cage. Mike Fraser made 40 saves for Iona. The Minutemen out-shot the Gaels, 44-19.

Massachusetts will travel to Durham, N.H. for a Hockey East battle with second-ranked New Hampshire on Sunday, Novv. 24. The puck will drop at 4:00 p.m.
